The Three Rivers Arts Festival is a tradition that has been happening in Pittsburgh for 54 years. People look forward to it every year and it’s basically the grand kick-off for summer! The festival is the closes thing Pittsburghers have to Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and all the other big time music festivals. This is our version and it is filled with music, games, art, food, family and friends, and ends with the Zambelli fireworks at night. The event starts around the first week of June and has different events and activities going on each day. The Festival was founded in 1960 by the Women’s Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art and great classic acts like Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Phillip Glass, Steven Reich, Smokey Robinson as well as literary legends Allen Ginsberg and Spalding Gray perform here at Point State Park. Here’s an audio interview with a couple of local Pittsburghers and a timeline of how far the festival has come since then.
